The Victorious Indian Princesses at CWG

EM Powerment! Strange word.... Isn’t it..?? Before I started penning down this blog I wondered for a while what could the exact definition of empowering something might be...

The online dictionary defines empowerment as PROVIDING POWER TO SOMEONE OR SOMETHING depending on the object involved. Browsing through the pages of newspapers my little pair of world viewing lenses (eyes I mean) came across a lot of news reports on crimes and women and a few development works for them as well. But there was something that held the attention of these lenses continuously for about 15 days, INDIAN WOMEN MEDALISTS IN THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2010.

The Article that I would be discussing is picked up from The Times of India and it praises the efforts of all the female medalists who made the India proud.

The medalists held their heads high by winning 37 of the 101 medals won by India.

It enlisted all the medalists which include Krishna Poonia who led an unprecedented clean sweep of all the women's discus medals, Manjeet Kaur, Sini Jose, Ashwini Akkunji and Mandeep Kaur who added another gold in a memorable 4x400m Relay race, In the wrestling arena, experienced Alka Tomar, hailing from Meerut's Sisoli village, showed great presence of mind and a solid defensive game to win the 59kg freestyle women's wrestling while Anita and Geeta also joined the party, Anisa Sayyed who fetched a gold in 25m Pistol, Shooting, Anita who won a gold Wrestling, Women's 67kg Freestyle, Renu Bala Chanu as she fetched a gold in Weightlifting, 58kg, Alka winning 37 of the 101 medals won by India Tomar wiining Wrestling and Deepika Kumari, L Bombayala Devi and Dola Banerjee who won gold Archery, Recurve Team

The efforts of all the ladies were undoubtedly worthwhile but some of them called exceptional. One Saina Nehwal’s victory in the Badminton final fetching her gold in Women’s single which was rated HISTORIC by a few TV channels and two off course the clean sweep of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa in the women’s doubles event in Badminton.

The women showcased a breathtaking performance which was an amalgam of confidence and courage Above all they had this spirit to fight against all the odds to reach their goals to win medals for their country after giving their best in their respective sports.

EMPOWERMENT THIS SURELY IS....

A LITTLE DIFFERENT THOUGH....EMPOWERMENT WHOSE WAY WAS DECIDED BY THESE WOMEN THEMSELVES.....EMPOWERMENT WHERE THEIR METTLE WAS PROVEN..THEIR POWER REALIZED....AND THEIR HAPPINESS APPRECIATED....
